What are dog food toppers, and how do they benefit my dog?
A dog food topper is a product that you add on top of your dog’s food. Our dog food topper (Dr. Phytos) is designed to enrich your dog’s diet with phytonutrients sourced from whole food nutrition.
How do I use the dog food topper with my pet's regular food?
Dr. Phytos phytonutrients are put on top of your dog’s food or can be stirred in. Sometimes it is beneficial to start out with a small amount and work your way up to the full recommended dose.
How much of the topper should I add to my dog's food?
The recommended amount is found on the label which states that dogs less than 40 pounds should get one scoop and dogs bigger than 40 pounds should get two scoops each day. When first starting to use Dr. Phytos food topper, start with a small amount and work up to the full recommended dose.
Is this topper suitable for all dog breeds and ages?
Yes! All dogs can benefit from having Dr. Phytos added to their diet.
What ingredients are used in your dog food toppers?
Dr. Phytos is made from the very best fruits, vegetables, fibers, and spices available to maximize your pets overall benefit. Ingredients: Tart Cherry, Cranberry, Garlic, Wild Blueberry, Red Cabbage, Soybean, Apple, Carrot, Kale, Cayenne Pepper, Shiitake Mushroom, Wheatgrass, Aloe Vera, Sweet Potato, Raspberry, Spinach, Cauliflower, Celery, Zucchini, Tomato, Broccoli, Banana, Green Cabbage, Strawberry, Psyllium Husk, Flax Seed, Cinnamon, Ginger Root, Turmeric, Fennel, Cardamom, Cumin, Fenugreek Coriander
Why is their garlic in the product?
We love to answer your questions. One question that often arises is about garlic, “How is the garlic in Dr. Phytos safe for my dog?” Older outdated studies that are found online can be misleading. Those studies were performed using astronomically high doses (5 grams per/kilogram and up) of garlic which because of the unusually high dose had some negative side effects. Newer studies have found that garlic in moderation can be very healthy for your dog. Naturopathic veterinarians, including Dr. Jake Van Dyke, without reservation, have long used garlic to benefit their patients.
Are your dog food toppers grain-free, gluten-free, or allergen-free?
Dr. Phytos is grain and gluten free. We carefully select our ingredients to minimize the potential for allergies. Still, every pet is unique. If you suspect your pet is having a reaction to any product, stop giving the product immediately and consult your veterinary team.
How is your dog food topper different from others on the market?
Dr. Phytos is formulated by both veterinary and medical professionals and designed for your pet’s maximum benefit. Your pet’s health is our top priority in order for them to live long, happy, and healthy lives.
Can the toppers be used as a meal replacement, or are they just a supplement?
Dr. Phytos is designed to supplement your pets diet and should not be used as a diet replacement.
How long does an opened bag of the topper last, and how should I store it?
Dr. Phytos is made safe for your dog through a process called freeze drying. Freeze dried food can be stable for many years in a sealed container that is void of oxygen and moisture. It is important to protect your product from air, sunlight, and keep it at room temperature in order to ensure it retains all of the nutrients. Once the product is opened it should be used over the course of a few months.
Can the topper be used with both dry kibble and wet food?
Yes! Dr. Phytos is great for both dry and wet foods.
Do you offer different flavors or varieties, and can I mix them?
Currently we only offer one flavor that most dogs enjoy. The combination of ingredients goes beyond flavor and is extensively researched to optimize the health benefits of fruits and vegetables in your dog’s diet. If your pet is not keen on the original Dr. Phytos blend, here are some things you can try.
1) Start out with a small amount and work up to the recommended dose of Dr. Phytos for your dog.
2) Moisten the food a little to aid in the binding of the phytonutrients to your dog’s food.
3) Mix a spoon of PLAIN (no added flavors or sugars) yogurt or greek yogurt to make a probiotic rich slurry that most dogs love.
4) Add a small amount of low sodium chicken broth.
5) If your pet still doesn’t like Phytonutrients, reach out to us about our flavored products coming soon.
Can your toppers help with picky eaters or dogs with a reduced appetite?
Many picky eaters love Dr. Phytos Phytonutrients! Picky eaters and dogs with small appetites benefit greatly by offering more nutrient dense foods in the limited amount they are willing to eat. Dr Phytos dog topper is an ideal solution for packing your dog’s diet with nutrient dense offerings. In fact– it is common for your pet to consume less dog food while taking Dr. Phytos Phytonutrients because they are getting the nutrition that their body craves with less fillers.
