What My Dog Has Taught Me

What My Dog Has Taught Me

Six months ago, my husband and I welcomed Koda, a sweet three-month-old Bernedoodle, into our lives. From the moment we met him, he stole my heart. As first-time dog owners, we knew raising a puppy would have its challenges. We anticipated all the things we’d need to teach him, from house training to basic commands. But as time went on, I realized something unexpected: Koda was teaching me just as much—if not more—than I was teaching him.

The lessons he’s imparted in such a short time have been invaluable, and I wouldn’t trade them for the world.

Every Day is a New Day

Life often feels like a series of routines—work, chores, and the same daily grind. It’s easy to get stuck in that cycle. But Koda doesn’t see life that way. Each morning, as we begin our routine, he approaches the day with fresh enthusiasm. To him, every sunrise is a chance for new adventures. Yesterday’s worries? Forgotten. Today is bursting with possibilities.

Enjoy the Little Things

There’s a small grassy park near our house. Without a backyard of our own, it’s Koda’s favorite place to run, sniff, and explore. To him, it’s the most magical place in the world. Watching his excitement reminds me to slow down and appreciate the little things—the beauty of nature, the warmth of the sun, the rustle of leaves in the wind. It’s so easy to pass by these moments without a second thought. But when you take a moment to pause, the world becomes a far more fascinating and beautiful place.

Sometimes You Just Need to Play

Stress has a way of creeping into our lives, building up if we let it. Often, we try to unwind with a movie or scrolling through our phones, but this rarely helps us truly decompress. Koda has taught me the value of play—real, active, and joyful play. Whether it’s a walk outside, a game of fetch, or simply running around together, these moments help release stress in a way screens never can.

We All Need Connection

Koda has been my secret weapon for meeting new neighbors. His enthusiasm for people is contagious—he wants to be friends with everyone he meets. In today’s world, where we often lose touch with our sense of community, Koda reminds me of the importance of being personable and connecting with others. Greeting neighbors with a smile or a friendly hello can bring unexpected joy to your day.

How Fast Life Goes By

We all know life is fleeting, but living with Koda has given me a new perspective on this truth. Watching him grow and change so quickly reminds me to cherish the present and focus on what truly matters. It’s easy to get distracted by things that won’t last and to not miss the precious moments while they are here. Each day with him is a gift, and I don’t want to waste a single moment.

Koda has taught me so much, and I know our journey together is just beginning. Because of everything he’s given me, I want to give him the best in return—to keep him happy, healthy, and thriving for years to come. I’m grateful for the lessons, the laughter, and the love he brings to my life every single day.
